This course will assist participant both theoretical and practical elements to build capability and confidence. This teach participant on how to deal with various medical emergencies including resuscitation, fractures, dislocations and spinal injuries. The course will equip participant with the knowledge to apply immediate first aid to an injured casualty and to a person suffering illness on board.

Course Objective

At the end of this course, delegates will be able:

  • Learn how to treat a range of conditions and understand the importance of offering efficient and effective First Aid
  • Describe use of the Medical First Aid Guide, including treatment required as a result of accidents involving dangerous goods
  • Identify the immediate measures to be taken when accidents, medical emergencies or illnesses occur, including prioritising actions to be taken and minimising risk of harm to self and casualty
  • Demonstrate maintenance of airway, breathing and circulation in a casualty requiring resuscitation, and an unconscious or choking casualty including carrying out cardio-pulmonary resuscitation
  • Recognize the cause of shock and demonstrate its management
  • Identify casualty rescue requirements and demonstrate appropriate transportation techniques

MODULE 1 – FIRST AID

  • First aid kit standards and requirement
  • External breathing emergencies – choking
  • Sudden illness
  • Environmental illness
  • Soft tissue illness
  • Bone and joint injury

MODULE 2 – ROLES OF A FIRST AIDER

  • Understand the role of the first-aider

MODULE 3 – PRIMARY SURVEY 

  • The importance of a Primary Survey and how to conduct one correctly

MODULE 4 – RECOVERY POSITION

  • How to place a casualty into the correct position

MODULE 5 – THE CHAIN OF SURVIVAL

  • The importance of efficient and effective First Aid

MODULE 6 – CPR 

  • How to perform CPR correctly

MODULE 7 – AED (AUTOMATED EXTERNAL DEFIBRILLATOR)

  • How to use an AED correctly

MODULE 8 – PREVENTING CROSS INFECTION

  • How to prevent cross infection by appropriate care when giving first aid

MODULE 9 – HEART ATTACK

  • How to identify signs and symptoms of a heart attack and be able to assist the casualty

MODULE 10 – CHOKING

  • How to help somebody who is suffering from choking
  • Establish and learn what to do when an emergency situation arises
  • The need for recording incidents and accidents
  • Learn how to and when to records incidents and actions
